Brush chipping in Salem, New Hampshire
A new customer reached out to us with quite the brush chipping job. We're talking about a 10 x 30 ft pile of brush!! Not just any ole pile of sticks though. The customer told us that this pile had accumulated over 20 years. Two decades of debris piling up, when eventually, it started to encroach on the lawn and kid's play area. We thought we could knock it out in half a day, but ran into some unforeseen difficulties...
Our approach to this project.
- Back the 12'' chipper (the big boy) to the brush pile at the correct angle, enabling us to spray most of the chips into the woods
- Move the chipper backwards as it works through the pile, sending chips deeper in the woods.
- Cleanup. Rake up remains sticks and twigs.
NOTE: The customer didn't have to pay for any 'dump fees' since we were allowed to chips the pile straight into the woods.
Some lessons learned
This was probably the 'oldest' pile of brush the crew have ever chipped before and learned a few things the hard way.
Having sat there for 20 years, the pile had plenty of time to settle and decompose. Tree limbs were so brittle, they would break into a thousand pieces when handling them, causing the cleanup phase to last much, much longer. They were unaware of many large logs at the bottom of the pile. These took forever to chip up and most of them were rotten and hard to handle.
It's rare that any job goes completely according to plan, but as always, we learn from them. In this case, we'll definitely be approaching 'old' brush piles differently in the future haha.
